Old News
Saturday saw the Troy women's basketball program falter to start 0-1 for the first time since 2018-19 in the first game in the MAC-SBC Challenge to Ball State 86-71.
A slow start by Troy allowed the Cardinals to pull out to a 16-point advantage, 21-5, with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter when Madelyn Bischoff drilled one of her six from deep. The Trojans battled to cut the deficit to eight, heading into the locker room with buckets by Ja'Mia Hollings, Zay Dyer and Leilani Augmon.
The second half saw Ball State expand its lead to as much as 21 points, 64-43, late in the third. However, Troy caught fire in the fourth, outscoring the Cardinals 20-16, including three straight 3-pointers to cut the deficit down to 11, 75-64, with 7:01 left. Ultimately, Ball State's early advantage was too much as the Trojans fell in their home opener.
Hollings performed with a near-double-double in her senior debut, posting an 18-point, nine rebound, one block stat line. Sharonica Hartsfield also dished off 10 assists to match her career high, while Dyer was one rebound short (11 points, nine rebounds) of a double-double in her Troy debut.
Scouting Samford
Samford comes to Trojan Arena on its best start since 2009-10 at 2-0 after posting victories over AUM (78-51) and Central Arkansas (65-62) on Monday and Saturday, respectively.
