TROY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference announced Thursday afternoon that Lee Poppell of the Troy men's golf program earned Sun Belt Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career.
"We are all very proud of Lee," head coach Clay Bounds said. "He's been playing solid all season, and to see him put together three good rounds at UNA was great. While we were at Little Rock competing, all the guys were asking me, 'How's Lee doing? What's Lee at now'? I think his play really gave them a boost to play well, also. Lee is a great player and will only continue to improve."
The freshman shined at the MartinFed Invite at Turtle Point, posting a 204 over the two-day event to finish second individually. His 12-under tied for the lowest round by a Trojan golfer since at least the 2005-06 season, shooting 60s in all three rounds. Poppell opened the tournament with his best round of 67, managing eight birdies to shoot 5-under.
In 54 holes, the Tallahassee, Fla., native carded 19 birdies to tie for the most in the field. In the tournament, Poppell stood out at the par-4 holes, dominating with a 7-under par to rank first against the competition. Overall, he led the Trojans to a fifth-place finish, topping in-state foes Samford and Alabama A&M.
Poppell returns to the course with his fellow Trojans for 'The Clerico' in Tulsa, Okla. From Oct. 23-24.
