Troy (11-8, 6-2 SBC) saw its six-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a narrow 1-point loss at James Madison in a showdown between the league's top-two teams. In fact, of Troy's last four losses, two have come in overtime and the other two by a combined three points.
Â
The game with the Dukes lived up to the hype, with both teams holding leads of 7-plus points at one point in the contest and Troy's Makayia Hallmon netting a career-best 33 points, including two 3-pointers in the final seven seconds.
Â
Trojan Arena has proved to be one of the best homecourt advantages in the country for Chanda Rigby's club, as they have won 37 of their last 42 league games at home. Troy has won six straight overall against South Alabama (5-14, 1-7) and six straight at home against the Jags. The Trojans have not lost to their in-state rival at home since January 2016.
Â
Despite playing two of the nation's top defensive teams on the road last week, Troy extended its streak of 75-plus point games to a program record 12 straight times. The key to the Trojans' scoring success has been its balanced offense which has five players averaging double-figures on the year and only 3.2 points separating the leading scorers (Nia Daniel, Hallmon – 13.9) from the fifth-leading scorer (Amber Leggett – 10.2), with Tai'Sheka Porchia and Ja'Mia Hollings in the middle with 11.8 points per game.
Â
The Trojans have ramped up their shooting efficiency over the past seven weeks, hitting on 41 percent or better of their shots from the floor in eight of their last 11 games after connecting on fewer than 40 percent of their shots in their first eight games of the season.
Â
South Alabama snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 45-43 victory over Texas State on Saturday. The Jags have struggled to score the basketball this season and have scored less than 50 points in six of their last seven games.
