Women’s Basketball Travels to Marshall in Search of Sixth Straight Win
1/18/2023 2:15:00 PM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Ala. – Troy carries a top-30 winning streak into Thursday's matchup at Marshall, as the Trojans have won five straight games dating back to their league opener. Tip-off between the Trojans and Thundering Herd is set for 5 p.m. (CT) in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
After dropping a pair of overtime games earlier in the year, Troy (10-7, 5-1 SBC) got the monkey off its back with an 85-78 win over a pesky Louisiana club last Saturday. The win over the Cajuns avenged one of just two Sun Belt losses last season by the Trojans and ran Troy's win streak out to five games.
Nia Daniel scored 22 points, including eight of Troy's 15 points in overtime, to lead five Trojans in double-figures against the Cajuns. The 7-point victory was the first in single-digits for Troy during its current winning streak, which ranks as the 27th longest in the country.
Chanda Rigby-coached teams are always known for their offensive prowess, but this year's club has a chance to do something that not only no Rigby-coached team has done, but no team in Troy history has accomplished, scoring 75 or more points in 11 straight games. Three of Troy's six Sun Belt opponents so far this season rank in the top four in the league, allowing an average of 57.0 points per game; the Trojans averaged 79.7 against them.
Marshall (9-8, 2-4) ranks fifth on that list allowing an average of 59.2 points per game. The Thundering Herd opened its membership in the Sun Belt with consecutive wins over South Alabama and App State, but since then have dropped four straight.
The Herd are led by Roshala Scott's 17.5 points per game and 13.4 points from Abby Beeman, who surpassed the 1,500-point mark in her career in Saturday's game.
Individually for the Trojans, Amber Leggett has posted back-to-back double-doubles just four games in her return from retirement, while Nia Daniel and Makayia Hallmon have shared the scoring leader duties leading Troy in seven games each.
Defensively, the Trojans are 32nd nationally, forcing 20.4 turnovers per game and 13th with 11.8 steals per game, paced by Sharonica Hartsfield's 2.3 steals per contest.
