MOBILE, Ala. – Troy women's soccer succumbs to a 5-0 loss to in-state rival South Alabama on Thursday night at "The Cage."
The Trojans (2-4-2, 0-1-1 SBC) fall to the Jaguars (5-1-4, 1-0-1) for the fourth straight time as USA captures its first conference win of the season.
Jayla Gage and Gabrielle Chartier were the only Trojans to put a shot on the board, with Gage accounting for the one shot on goal.
Five different Jaguars put a goal on the board as six of USA's 11 starters let out a shot. Monique Gray continued her dominance with a three-point performance as she added a goal and assist to her totals.
Tough Result
The Trojans started strong, with most of the opening minutes spent on the attack. A penalty kick opportunity for Gabrielle Gayle at the 7:49 mark allowed the Jaguars to take the 1-0 lead.
Chartier responded quickly with Troy's first shot just two minutes later. The 5-5 sophomore released a rocket that went just above the net.
Troy fought through multiple shots from the Jaguars with tough, physical defense before Gracie Wilson put USA up 2-0 off the assist from Gray. Going into the locker room, Troy found itself down 3-0 after Gray found the back of the net at the 25:46 mark.
Defensively, Troy opened the second half on a roll, keeping the Jaguars quiet for the first 24 minutes. Then, in the 69th minute, South Alabama punched in two more goals to finish the game at 5-0.
Lane's Thoughts
"Disappointing result tonight. This performance was not indicative of the potential this team has. Full credit to South Alabama tonight and the quality they played with for the duration of the match. We'll look forward to a response from the group on Sunday."
Rivalry Memorables
• Gage let out Troy's only shot on goal, marking her sixth game with a shot on goal.
• Troy was well-disciplined through 90 minutes, limiting the offside calls to three while USA had four.
• Despite the loss, Troy spent most of the first half on their offensive end, accounting for 64 percent of the time.
Redemption Sunday
The Trojans return to the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday for a conference test against Arkansas State at 1 p.m.
