TROY, Ala. – Despite a late goal from Nia Wilson, Troy women's soccer stumbled to its second straight loss, 2-1, in Sun Belt play on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex against Arkansas State.
The Trojans (2-5-2, 0-2-1 SBC) start conference play without a win through three matches after the Red Wolves (4-4-2, 2-1-0 SBC) hand Troy its first home loss of the season.
Wilson found the back of the net for her second goal of the season off the second assist from Gabrielle Chartier. Ella Owen led the team in shots on goal with two and three total shots.
Darby Stotts and Sarah Strong were the difference-makers for the Red Wolves as ASU went off for a seven-point performance.
Little Too Late
Troy dominated the first half offensively, launching four shots in the first 20 minutes, with Jayla Gage accounting for three. However, when the first horn sounded to end the half, neither team found the back of the net, with Troy winning the shot battle, 5-3.
The second half had the role's reversed as ASU attacked early before Darby Stotts received the pass from Emma Riley for the first goal of the game, 1-0, at the 56:46 mark.
ASU kept the heat coming as Sarah Strong took the shot from the penalty arc and found the top left of the net to put the Red Wolves up, 2-0, with 27:04 remaining.
The Trojans found some momentum after that goal, letting out four goals to ASU's one before a corner kick opportunity from Chartier found the head of Wilson to punch in the goal, 2-1.
Troy didn't let up, pulling off two more shots and corner-kick opportunities. However, none of them found the back of the net as the final horn sounded, and Troy fell at home, 2-1.
Robert Lane's Remarks
"Disappointing result for us. I thought the game was in the balance for a good portion of the 90 minutes, and a few mental mistakes on our part put us in a bad position. Credit to Arkansas State. They went away and tucked away their chances. Good fight at the end to pull one back and to push on to try and find an equalizer, but you know, just not good enough on the day. We spend a lot of time on set pieces. We recognize at this point that they can make or break a game for us. It was nice to see Nia take her opportunity well. Our shape (on the field) allows us to create corners, and we'd like to be able to put more of them in the back of the net."
Winning on the Stats
• Wilson's goal was her second of the season and fourth of her career.
• For the first time this season, Troy tied its opponent in fouls at nine apiece.
• Troy won the shot battle for the seventh time this season, winning 13-10.
• Troy's goal came off a picturesque corner kick from Chartier as Troy dominated with five corner kick opportunities.
Heading to the Peach State
Troy's next journey takes them to Atlanta, Ga., when they take on Georgia State next Sunday at noon.
