9/2/2022 8:09:00 PM | Volleyball
BATON ROUGE, La. – It was a tough start to the Tiger Challenge for the Trojans as they dropped both games of the tournament to LSU (14-25, 15-25, 13-25) and Penn State (18-25, 21-25, 16-25) on Friday from the Maracvich Assembly Center.
Troy (2-3) struggled on offense as Julia Brooks led Troy with nine kills against LSU as Troy hit 0.60 as a team. However, LSU (2-2) was sound defensively, accumulating 11 blocks compared to the Trojan's four as well as 27 digs to Troy's 19.
For the Tigers, Paige Flickinger led all players with 11 kills and four service aces, as Amara Anderson once again led all players in the match with 24 assists. Unfortunately, service errors played a large role in the defeat as Troy recorded 10 and never found a way to recover and get back in the match.
Against Penn State (5-0), the Trojans continued to fight, led by Halston Hillier, the only Trojan to record double-digit kills on the afternoon with 10. In addition, Thirty assists from Amara Anderson continues her march towards the all-time assists record as she is now 286 assists away. The Nittany Lions had 11 more digs, then Troy totaling 34, with the Trojans only recording 23.
LSU
Set 1: Early on, the Trojans looked to keep the match close as they were never down by more than three before the media timeout. With the score 15-12 in favor of the Tigers, the host outscored Troy 10-2 to pull away and claim the first set.
Set 2: LSU went on to start the second set, much like they had ended the first. Troy never led in the set, and the Tigers got off to a 7-0 start before a kill from Hillier got Troy on the board.
Set 3: Troy still had fight in them despite being down two sets as there were four ties and two lead changes, which was the most of any set in the match. The Tigers again took advantage of the Trojan's attack errors and saw a 10-point advantage leading 20-10. Despite a few consecutive points going the Trojan's way, LSU went on to win the set and close out the match.
Penn State
Set 1: The Nittany Lions got out to a five-point lead and never looked back. The Trojans had 11 kills in the set and hit .320, but Penn State was able to hold off the Trojan's late surge as Troy held off three set points before Penn State won 25-18.
Set 2: The Trojans saw their first lead of the evening in the second set as there were five ties in the set alone. Troy battled back from three points down multiple times. With the score 22-21 in favor of Penn State, the Nittany Lions capitalized on attack errors to go up two sets.
Set 3: Much like set one, Penn State was in control most of the set. The Trojans had their lowest kill percentage sitting at .069. Penn State also won the serve game committing only two errors all night with six aces. Troy only had two service aces with seven service errors.
Up Next: The Trojans will close out the Tiger Challenge tomorrow, September 3, at noon when they take on Iowa State.
