Women’s Soccer Opens Season at Samford in Exhibition Match

TROY, Ala. –The Troy women's soccer team opens their 2022 season with an exhibition match against Samford on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Shauna Yelton Field.
Troy comes off a 3-0 spring season that included a victory over Samford, 1-0. Before that, the Trojans finished 2021 with a 7-10-1 record for ninth in the Sun Belt Conference.
How Are We Looking?
Despite losing a few Trojans, the team retained most key players, including the 2021 All-Sun Belt Second Team netminder, Lindsey LaRoche, who finished last season ranked second in the Sun Belt for goals-against average at 0.90 and third in save percentage at 82.4 percent.
The Trojans return five of its top scorers in Erin Bloomfield, Ella Owen, Taytum Terrell, Nia Wilson and Lisa Blankestein. Bloomfield led the Trojans in her 17 games, scoring a team-high seven goals in 19 shots. Terrell was the primary passer, having three assists and one goal to boost.
Troy brought in five freshmen in Abria Smith, Halee Bradbury, Nittany Vega, Jordan Schaetzly and Grace Havard and three transfers with Jayla Gage, Jocelyn Garcia and Ashley Rainho. With all the movement, Troy enters the 2022 season with a plethora of youth, having just eight of its 27 players as upperclassmen.

Sunday's exhibition match sparks the second meeting of 2022 between the programs, with the team's last official meeting held back in 2016. The Bulldogs pulled through with the 2-0 victory off goals by Malcanisha Kelly and Jermaine Seoposenwe.
In the 2-0 loss, Troy let off seven total shots with just one by Devin Gaskill on goal. The Trojans found themselves down 2-0 through 45 minutes before shutting out the Bulldogs in the second with the substitution of Sydnay Tucker at goal.
Where was Samford in 2021?
Samford finished the 2021 season at 16-3-3, and a perfect 9-0 record in Southern Conference play. The team pulled through to win the SoCon Tournament title and make a second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Bulldogs retained three of their four top goal scorers in Mary Raymond, Taylor Yount and Kylie Gazza, with Raymond ranked third in the SoCon with nine goals.
Morgan McAslan also returns for the Bulldogs, coming off her career-best year with 10 shutouts on the season for 0.79 goals against average – ranked second in SoCon.
