HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team fumbled its match against Alabama A&M, 1-0, in a physical match on Monday afternoon at Bulldog Field.
The Trojans fall to 0-2 for the second time in the last five years, while the Bulldogs (1-1) secured their first win over Troy since 2000 – Troy led the series 4-1 before the match.
Ella Owen led the charge offensively, letting out four shots on the afternoon with one on goal. Ashley Rainho and Abria Smith seized their opportunities going a perfect 3-of-3 in the match.
After 78 minutes of scoreless soccer, K'la Barnes-Blackwood found the back of the net off the top of the crossbar for the game-winning unassisted goal.
The One That Got Away
Troy started strong with three unanswered shots off Owen, Rainho and Melissa Kuya-Strobel before things began to balance.
When the first half finished, the score remained tied at zero after the Bulldogs kept Troy from letting out a shot in the final 13 minutes compared to their four.
Jayla Gage opened the second half on a mission, jetting her way through the defense before taking her second shot of the night just 22 seconds in.
After back-and-forth physical play, Barnes-Blackwood was the one to end the scoreless streak, bouncing in a shot from the top left of the crossbar to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage. Despite one last attempt by Rainho at the 89:15 mark, Troy fell to Alabama A&M, ending a four-match win streak against the Bulldogs.
Hear from Robert Lane
"Disappointed with the result. We were looking for a response coming off the Texas Tech loss and we just didn't perform well enough in any phase of the game, particularly in the final third. Credit to the young ladies of Alabama A&M for their fight and energy tonight. We just have to be ready come McNeese State."
Numbers to Navigate
• Lindsey LaRoche finished the day with her second loss of the season despite facing 16 shots for six saves.
• Troy won the statistical battle, outshooting the Bulldogs, 18-16, and having three corner kicks to their two.
• The Trojans were getting everyone involved, with 10 players taking a shot and seven players with a shot on goal.
Set for South Alabama Tournament
After the team's first weekend of 2022, the Trojans prepare to travel to Mobile, Ala., for the South Alabama Tournament, where they take on McNeese State on Thursday and North Alabama on Sunday.
