TROY, Ala. – After closing out yet another successful season with the Troy women's basketball team, head coach Chanda Rigby earned the Bubba Scott Lifetime Achievement Award at the Alabama High School Athletic Association Convention Thursday.
Â
Rigby earns the distinction after leading the Trojans to a Sun Belt Regular Season title this past season. Troy posted a 24-9 record, the fourth consecutive 20-win season for the program, and a 13-2 conference record, the third straight season with just two conference losses.
Â
"On behalf of Troy University and Troy Athletics, I'd like to congratulate Chanda Rigby for this well-deserved recognition," Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "Coach Rigby has elevated the quality of women's basketball in the state of Alabama to an extraordinary level with five Sun Belt Championships, three NCAA Tournaments and one of the highest scoring teams in the country year after year. As good of a coach as she is, she is that much better of a person, and we couldn't ask for anyone better to represent the Troy Trojans."
Â
Rigby's impact on the Trojans extends far beyond the hardwood. The Trojans work hard to make an impact on both the Troy and basketball community.
Â
The Trojans have adopted two streets in town they keep clean from trash. They spend time with kids and have worked in the greenhouse at the Christian Love Center.
Â
As a part of MLK Day of Service and women's basketball Play4Kay and Shootin 4 Shelby efforts, the Trojans spent time before practice to write letters to some of the women the team knows fighting their battle with breast cancer. In Troy's first game wearing pink to raise money for breast cancer research, the Trojans raised nearly $2,000 again.
Â
The lifetime achievement award is named for the late AHSAA Executive Director Herman L. Scott, who helped start the FCA in Alabama during his tenure with the AHSAA.
Â
Scott was a successful Alabama high school coach, where he helped lead Haleyville to three State Championships before replacing Bobby Bowden at Howard College, which is now Samford.
Â
He helped establish the Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Scholarship program that now awards more than $800,000 to senior student-athletes at AHSAA member schools.
