Troy Softball Falls in Regular Season Finale to South Alabama

TROY, Ala. – Troy dropped the final contest of the regular season to South Alabama, 9-0, Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Prior to the start of the game, the Trojans (29-19, 15-12 Sun Belt) honored seniors Tate Moseley, Kaylee Chapman, Candela Figueroa, Adia Polk, Logan Calhoun and Haley Postell. All six seniors saw action in today's contest with five of them earning the start.
Despite the loss, Troy earned its third straight series win over the Jaguars (24-19, 16-5 Sun Belt) this weekend.
After a quiet two frames, a three-run home run off the bat of Victoria Ortiz gave South Alabama the lead once and for all.
Senior Postell entered in the top of the fourth and worked around a Troy fielding error to retire the side.
Taylor McKinney struck for Troy's first hit of the contest, a one-out single to shallow right field, but was ultimately left stranded.
Ortiz tacked on another run for the visitors in the top of the fifth with a triple that scored Mackenzie Brasher, who led off with an infield single. Kamdyn Kvistad followed Ortiz with a solo shot before a single up the middle capped off a four-run inning for the Jaguars.
South Alabama went on to add two runs in the top of the sixth to put the run rule in effect.
Despite a double off the bat of Jade Sinness, Troy could not plate the runs necessary to keep the game alive.
Ortiz finished the contest going 3-for-3 with four RBIs. The right fielder was just a double shy of batting for the cycle.
Olivia Lackie (14-7) picked up the win after scattering two hits, a walk and fanning nine batters.
The Trojans utilized four different pitchers in the finale, but starter Leanna Johnson (19-11) was tabbed with the loss after allowing three runs, five hits and a walk.
Next Up
The Trojans finished Sun Belt action at 15-12, good enough for a first round by in the Sun Belt Tournament. Troy will kickstart action in Mobile, Ala. on Wednesday.
