TROY, Ala. – Troy men's basketball brings in Nelson Phillips from the defending SBC champions, Georgia State, head coach Scott Cross announced Wednesday evening.
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Nelson Phillips to our basketball team, Cross said. "Nelson is a player that we are very familiar with as we have had the opportunity to scout him over the past few years. He was always a player that really concerned our coaching staff because of his ability to shoot combined with his great athleticism."
The 6-3, 180-pound guard played all his first three seasons with Georgia State, being the sixth-leading scorer on the championship roster at 7.7 points per game on 44 percent shooting from the field. His season-high came in an 83-77 loss to Mercer with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including five 3-pointers.
Last season, the Georgia native played in 22 games with 11 starts on a 44/33.8/62.5 shooting split. The senior stretched the floor with his 1.2 3-pointers made per game.
"He is very active defensively and can be very disruptive with his length and anticipation on passes," Cross explained. "Then, you have to account for him at all times because he was one of the top three-point shooters in the Sun Belt Conference. Nelson will also give us another older, mature player that has a ton of Division-I experience. He is also a guy that will be very familiar with the Sun Belt Conference and can help us win a championship."
On the defensive end, Phillips was insatiable with 1.6 steals per game which ranked sixth in the Sun Belt. Combine his 3.4 rebounds per game, and Phillips made his presence felt.
A graduate from Warner Robins High School, Phillips couldn't play in the 2020-21 season due to injury. Before the injury, Phillips averaged 8.1 points and 3.8 rebounds on a 47.1/41.1/72.7 percent shooting split.
Before committing to GSU, Phillips was a four-star prospect and ranked among the top 100 players in the country by 247sports.com. He earned a plethora of honors, including All-State, All-Region, All-County and Region 5-A Player of the Year, after leading his high school to a 2018 5-A State Championship.
Phillips becomes the third transfer to join the Trojan roster alongside Aamer Muhammad (Lubbock Christian) and Darius McNeill (UTSA).
