TROY, Ala. – After battling back all afternoon, the Trojan comeback came up just short as they fell in the final home game of the season 10-8 to the UAB Blazers.
Trailing 9-2 through the first five innings, the Trojans scored six unanswered runs in the fifth and the seventh inning but didn't come up with the big hit to tie the game.
Kyle Mock and Caleb Bartolero each finished with two RBIs, as Easton Kirk, Jesse Hall, and Mock were responsible for scoring six of the eight runs.
Trojan starter Bay Witcher (3-4) went six innings for the third time this season but surrendered nine runs on 11 hits with only three strikeouts.
UAB used six relief pitchers following Blazer's starter Dalton Skinner's 3.2 innings of work, with Brady Greene (3-0) picking up the win after getting the final out of the fourth inning.
The Blazers built an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as the visitors used a single and a two-out home run to take a two-run advantage. Four runs came across in the second in part to four singles and a walk to give UAB six runs on six hits through the first two innings.
After a scoreless third inning, the Blazers once again tacked on two more runs with two outs in the fourth inning to get out to an 8-0 lead before the Trojans got their first hit.
That first hit for Troy came courtesy of Kirk as he led off the bottom of the fourth with a double. The Trojans capitalized when Mock doubled in the first Troy run of the game. A wild pitch scored the second Troy run of the afternoon with the bases loaded, but that's all that came from the inning.
An error with two outs in the fifth kept the inning alive for the Blazers, and they would later come home to score with more timely hitting, adding their ninth run.
The Trojans battled back all afternoon and got within four runs after scoring three in the bottom of the fifth. Hall got things started with a hit by a pitch and made his way to third after a Kirk single. Next, Bartolero hit a sacrifice fly and was followed by a Donovan Whibbs double to score Kirk. Then, for the second time in the game, Troy took advantage of a wild pitch to score a run.
Troy's comeback was officially on as they batted around in the seventh to score three times to make it a 9-8 game. A leadoff walk and a hit by pitch put runners on, and two wild pitches later, Troy had scored their sixth run.
After seeing 11 pitches, Bartolero took the 12th pitch of his bat down the left-field line for a double, bringing in a run, and a Mock single made it a one-run game. However, Troy was able to get the tying run all the way to third, and what looked to be the tying hit from Trey Leonard was taken away after a diving catch from the center fielder.
An insurance run was added in the top of the ninth, making it 10-8, where it went final, giving Troy their eighth straight loss
Up Next: Troy will hit the road one final time in the regular season as they travel to Boone, N.C., for their last Sun Belt series before the Sun Belt tournament.
