SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite a sixth-inning home run from Kelly Horne, Troy fell in the series finale to Texas State, 5-2, Sunday at Bobcat Stadium.
Â
The Trojans refused to back down, bringing the contest back within three in the top of the sixth after falling behind 5-0.
Â
Jade Sinness ripped a one-out double down the right-field line, setting up Kelly Horne for a two-run long ball. Horne's homer was her 11th of the season, moving her into sixth in Troy's single-season record.
Â
Leanna Johnson (18-10) worked around trouble in the home half of the opening frame, issuing a trio of walks, to hold the Bobcats scoreless.
Â
After the Trojans went down quietly in the top of the second, Texas State utilized a pair of singles and back-to-back walks caused by illegal pitches to plate the first run of the contest.
Â
Libby Baker came in in relief of Johnson and allowed a second run to score following a bases-loaded free pass, but Baker evaded any more damage fanning the final batter of the frame.
Â
A quiet third and fourth frame sent Texas State into the bottom of the fifth with a 2-0 advantage.
Â
However, after a leadoff walk to Sara Vanderford, a triple off the bat of Caitlin Rogers and a single from Piper Randolph saw Texas State take a 4-0 lead. Texas State capped off a three-run inning by using a pair of ground outs to score Randolph.
Â
After the homer from Horne, Baker retired the side in the bottom half of the sixth, but Troy's comeback attempt fell short, needing three runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game alive. Blake Gibson smashed a one-out single through the right side but was ultimately left stranded.
Â
Jessica Mullins (23-11) earned the victory in all three games of the weekend after giving up just Horne's homer.
Â
Johnson was tabbed with the loss for the Trojans as she was responsible for the first two runs scored in the contest.
