TROY, Ala. – For the 10th time this season, the Trojans put up at least 10 runs as they open their series with Georgia State with a 10-1 victory at Riddle-Pace Field Friday night.
Trojan pitching also got it done as they held the Panthers to only one run on two hits, striking out 14 batters on the evening.
Both Jesse Hall and William Sullivan had big nights with the bats, each finishing with three RBIs on three hits. Easton Kirk and Caleb Bartolero contributed two hits, with Kyle Mock connecting for his fifth home run of the season.
Freshman reliever Keaton Fuller (2-0) won after being called upon in the second inning when starter Garrett Gainous left the game with an injury. Fuller threw four scoreless innings striking out a career-high six and only allowing one hit.
For Georgia State, Trey Horton (0-1) earns the loss in five innings of work giving up three runs on six hits, only striking out two with two walks.
Gainous saw two quick outs on four pitches in the first inning, but two walks and a single had loaded the bases full of Panthers. Then, with two strikes, a passed ball got made its way to the backstop, allowing the ball game's first run.
The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the second as the Panthers threw the ball around, committing two errors, with one letting Bartolero score from second base.
Gainous threw one pitch in the third inning before head coach Skylar Meade noticed something wasn't right and took him out after two innings. Gainous Struck out three batters while giving up one hit.
The 1-1 deadlock was broken up in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Troy using three hits to score two runs to take the lead. Brandon Schrepf was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was followed by a Hall single putting him in scoring position for Sullivan, who singled, bringing in his 23rd RBI of the season.
The third baseman Kirk brought in Sullivan with a single of his own, seeing Troy take a 3-1 lead.
Troy didn't wait long to continue to add to their lead as Hall notched his team-leading the 12th double of the season with two outs in the sixth, bringing in his 33rd and 34th RBI of the year, also a team-high.
The seventh saw Troy score for the third straight inning as Kyle Mock connected for his fifth home run of the year, giving Troy a 6-1 lead.
Troy got to double digits in part of a four-run eighth inning as the hit parade continued recording five hits to give the Panthers very little chance of coming back.
Noah Janney, Grayson Stewart, and Marquez Oates saw action as Stewart got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth to keep the Panthers to one run.
Up Next: The Trojans and Panthers continue their three-game set tomorrow, Saturday, April 30th, at 3 p.m. with Rigsby Mosley on the mound for Troy.
