EL DORADO, Ark. – Troy climbed three spots on the leaderboard into a tie for ninth place following Tuesday's final round of the Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship. The Trojans carded the second-best round of the day with a 10-over 298 on a day where the leaders were 17-over and 19-over par.
Mystic Creek proved to be a daunting task for the second straight year, with the average score across the field of 60 players settling at 76.67 for the week and 77.33 for Tuesday's final round. The top three in Troy's lineup – Brantley Scott, Will McFadden and Jake Springer played below the average score.
Scott made the turn even following a bogey on 16 and a birdie on 18 but ran into trouble midway through his final nine holes. A triple on the par-4 third pushed his card to 3-over, and he followed with three more bogeys before ending his round on a positive note with a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Scott shot 5-over on the day and 12-over for the week to tie for 19th place overall.
Georgia Southern and Little Rock tied for first place during the stroke play portion of the championship and will occupy the top two seeds for match play, which opens Wednesday. UT Arlington finished third, and Georgia State needed a final-hole collapse from Texas State to sneak into the No. 4 seed.
Springer and McFadden made substantial moves up the leaderboard thanks to their play Tuesday. Springer, who climbed 28 spots, was one of just four players to shoot under par in Tuesday's round and joined individual champion Evan White from Texas State as the only two to reach 2-under on the day. He carded five birdies and limited the damage to just three bogeys on the challenging golf course.
McFadden's move was 15 spots in the right direction as he and Springer tied for 24th place overall. McFadden's 2-over 74 on Tuesday completed his redemption story following a 9-over 81 in the opening round. He did not card a birdie in the round but had just two bogeys with the rest pars.
Kyle Cornelius fell one spot into a tie for 34th after shooting 5-over in a final round that featured one birdie, and Nicklas Borrmann tied for 47th after he wrapped play with a 6-over 78.
The result at the Sun Belt Championship ends a successful first season under head coach Forrest Schultz. Troy played nine rounds under par as a team, combined for 50 individual rounds under par, and posted a 97-53-2 record. Last year, Troy had one team round under par, 21 individual rounds under par and a 21-79 overall record.
