Troy Scrimmages in The Vet; Welcomes Back Letterwinners

TROY, Ala. – In front of hundreds of former letterwinners spanning seven decades of Troy Football, head coach Jon Sumrall led his Trojans through their first scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning in The Vet. Troy spent the first hour on the cool spring morning in a typical practice setting before scrimmaging for around 50 plays in the second half.
Troy's defense, which returns eight starters from last year, showed no signs of rust coming off last season's performance in which it ranked among the nation's leaders in sacks, tackles for loss, turnovers, interceptions and total defense.

"I thought the defense won the day. They attacked the entire practice with energy, enthusiasm, passion, intensity," Sumrall said. "The offense was behind, and sometimes that is going to happen – we're putting a lot of new things in and working through the installation piece. We didn't play as fast or as physical as we need to on offense, but our defense looked really good, and our offense needs to match that tempo and enthusiasm.
"Guys are playing hard. Through six practices so far, we've had zero issues with effort and playing hard," Sumrall added. "There are some things that we have to be a lot more detailed in, and I think the defense is ahead of the offense. Troy will once again alter its practice schedule due to the threat of inclement weather. As a result, the Trojans have moved their Tuesday practice to Monday morning, beginning at 8:10 a.m.
