TROY, Ala. – After playing 13 of its first 15 spring matches away from home, the Troy men's tennis team opens a three-match homestand this weekend by hosting Southern Miss on Saturday (11 a.m.) and Chattanooga on Sunday (12 p.m.) at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Troy (9-6) is playing some of its best tennis of the year, even if the results haven't tilted in the Trojans' favor. Rolando Vargas' squad took No. 24 Florida State to the brink last Friday in a 4-3 tussle that saw the two deciding singles matches go into three sets. Prior to that, Troy battled No. 60 UTSA and No. 74 East Tennessee State in matches that resulted in narrow decisions for the opponent.
Earlier this week, Troy defeated in-state rival Jacksonville State, 4-3, behind solid singles play down the stretch. The Trojans found themselves down 3-0 in the match before they rolled off four straight wins to clinch the victory.
Pelayo Antuna enters the weekend as the reigning Sun Belt Men's Tennis Player of the Week after winning on both the singles and doubles courts against the Seminoles. Antuna has won three straight singles matches and seven of his last nine overall, with the two losses coming in three sets.
Troy has been dominant on the top courts, with Pelayo, Carles Anton and Noah Martens combining for a 26-11 record on courts one through three this spring. Vito Llinares has proven to be a solid closer for the Trojans playing to a 10-4 mark on court six during dual matches.
To nobody's surprise, the combo of Antuna and Anton has turned into a successful pairing on the doubles circuit. The duo has posted a 10-3 mark so far, including wins over Florida State, DePaul, UNC Wilmington and Augusta.
