Trojans Use Home Run Ball to Power Past UT-Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas. – Three-run home runs from Rigsby Mosley and Easton Kirk were all Troy needed to be victorious Sunday afternoon as the Trojans ended its short two-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory over UT-Arlington from Clay Gould Park.
After an early two-run deficit, the Trojans (16-7, 4-2) would not let an opportunity pass them by in the top of the sixth. Thanks to Mosley, Troy put up a four-spot to take the lead after launching the first Trojan home run of the afternoon to the right-field bushes to give Troy the 4-2 lead.
The long ball gives Mosley his second home run of the season and 17th in his career.
The inning started after a pitch hit Cameron Gray, and Trey Leonard used his speed to bunt for a base hit. A Kyle Mock sacrifice fly had given Troy their first run of the game after Gray had advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Easton Kirk connected for his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the top half of the seventh to add some insurance runs for the Trojans and give Troy starter Bay Witcher (3-1) his third win of the season.
Witcher kept the Maverick (8-15, 2-4) bats tamed all afternoon after the two quick runs early in the game; Witcher allowed two runs in 5.2 innings pitched, five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Maverick starter Cade Winquest was cruising through the first five innings, only giving up one run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts but was pulled for Gray Bailey, who earned the loss (3-2).
Witcher found himself in trouble with the bases loaded and only one out after getting a strikeout to begin the game. Troy got the ground ball needed to turn a double play, but the runner had just beat out the throw.
Head coach Skylar Meade came running out the dugout calling for obstruction. After giving the umpires an earful and a lengthy meeting, the play stood, and the Mavericks had a 1-0 lead.
Nothing came of a William Sullivan double in the top of the third, and UTA capitalized with a solo home run by Wilson Galvin, giving UTA a 2-0 lead.
That would be the last lead the Mavericks saw of the afternoon, only adding a single run in the bottom eighth.
Grayson Stewart, Keaton Fuller, and Marquez Oates followed Witcher combining to hold UTA to four hits, one run, and two strikeouts, with Oates eventually earning his fifth save.
UP Next: Trojans travel to Montgomery and face Alabama State for the second time this season at Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday, March 29 at 6 p.m
