Troy Softball Stumbles Against ULM

TROY, Ala. – Despite a three-hit performance from Leanna Johnson, a costly opening frame error saw Troy stumble against ULM, 1-0, in the conference home opener Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Leanna Johnson (10-3) scattered hits in the first, fifth and seventh inning to keep the Trojans 16-7, 2-2 Sun Belt) within striking distance, but a costly fielding error that resulted in a run scored in the opening frame proved crucial in the pitchers' duel.
ULM's (16-6, 3-1 Sun Belt) Kennedy Johnson hit a two-out double down the right-field line to put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first. Andie Edwards followed with a fly ball to centerfield that was dropped by Jade Sinness and allowed Johnson to score from second.
Sinness directly followed the bobble with a diving catch to end the inning and avoid any more damage.
The Trojans loaded the bases off a hit by pitch, walk and a throwing error in the bottom of the first, but a ground out left the runners stranded.
Troy again loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, thanks to a pair of two-out walks and a single by Taylor McKinney, but the Trojans could not even the contest.
Needing a run to keep the game alive, Sinness drew a walk to put a runner on for Kelly Horne. Horne poked a single up the middle, bringing Libby Baker to the plate with two on and one out, but Baker grounded into a double play to end Troy's final at bat.
Johnson suffered the loss despite scattering three hits and a walk. The junior also tallied eight strikeouts and no earned runs.
Victoria Abrams (5-0) remained undefeated on the season after working around three hits and four walks.
