Troy Softball Splits Doubleheader with Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – Behind the arm of Libby Baker, Troy downed Coastal Carolina, 3-1, in game one of the doubleheader to earn the series win before falling in game two, 4-3, Sunday at Charles Wade-John Lott Field.

Baker recorded six strikeouts in her 5.1 innings of work in game one to pick up her fifth win of the season. The sophomore also went an impressive 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI at the plate in game one.

Game One: Troy 3, Coastal Carolina 1
The Trojans struck first in the top of the opening frame after Libby Baker rocketed a double down the left-field line to plate Kelly Horne, who was hit by a pitch.

However, Coastal Carolina answered in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly to even the contest.

After the Trojans went down in order, Coastal Carolina threatened with the bases loaded after Leanna Johnson walked a trio of Chanticleers. Baker (5-2) entered in relief of Johnson and forced a fly out to end the second.

Troy sparked a two-out rally in the top of the third that plated a pair of runs for the Trojans. After Baker led off the inning with an infield single, Anslee Finch ripped a triple down the right-field line to plate Baker.Â

Taylor McKinney directly followed with an RBI double to deep centerfield to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead.

Baker allowed just one hit through the remaining four innings to keep the Chanticleers at bay and earn her fifth win of the season.

Game Two: Coastal Carolina 4, Troy 3
Yet again, Troy struck first in the top of the first inning. This time, a solo home run off the bat of Kelly Horne would give the Trojans an early 1-0 advantage.

Johnson started in the circle for the Trojans, but after issuing a pair of walks, Baker entered into the circle and worked around a of her own walk to retire the Chanticleers.

Troy loaded the bases in the top of the second inning after two walks and a Coastal Carolina fielder error to set up Sinness for a two-run single.
Â
With a 3-0 lead in hand, Baker continued to work in the circle allowing just one base runner in the third and fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Coastal Carolina plated its first run of the contest off a single by Payton Ebersole, the first hit of the contest for the Chanticleers.

After the Trojans stranded a runner in the top of the sixth, Coastal Carolina tacked on three runs to take its first lead of the weekend. A two-run home run by Maddy Jennings cut the Chanticleers deficit the one.

A two-out single to right field by Makiya Thomas plated the fourth run of the contest for Coastal Carolina.

Kaitlyn Beasley-Polko (5-4) earned the win after entering in the second inning for Iyanla De Jesus. Beasley-Polko recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed just two hits to earn her fifth win of the season.

Baker suffered the loss for the Trojans despite no-hitting the Chanticleers until the fifth frame.
