Jacksonville, Fla. – A 5-3 Trojan win over Jacksonville Saturday afternoon from John Sessions Stadium, evened the series with the Dolphins and ended a short two-game losing streak for the Trojans.
Four straight innings with a run helped power the Trojans for victory as catcher Clay Stearns finished the day with two hits and two RBIs.
Troy (5-2) received good bullpen work from Grayson Stewart (2-0) and Logan Ross after starting pitcher Brady Fuller went 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and giving up three hits and a run.
Stewart would earn the win after picking up critical outs with a one-run lead in his 2.0 innings of work, finishing with three strikeouts. Parker Murphy (1-1) picked up the first loss for Jacksonville (5-1)
The Trojans would look to strike early after back-to-back singles to begin the game, but Jacksonville starting pitcher Tyler Nauman would be able to retire the next three batters in order.
Like last night, Troy got down to an early deficit after Jacksonville loaded the bases, but a timely double play turned by Donovan Whibbs and Jesse Hall limited the damage to only one run after the first inning.
Trojans broke out the bats in the fourth inning, as Caleb Bartolero continued to swing it well, picking up his sixth RBI of the season with a single, which brought in William Sullivan from second after his double put him on.
Stearns would give Troy their first lead of the series with a seeing-eye single up the middle, which plated Bartolero for the 2-1 lead.
The lead wouldn't last long as Jacksonville came right back to tie things up. With runners on second and first, the Dolphins had a double steal on, and a wild pitch got behind Stearns going to the backstop, and Jackson Grabsky was able to advance and score with no one covering home plate.
The Trojans would go on to score a run in the next three innings thanks to good base running as Rigsby Mosley scored off a wild pitch in the fifth. Then, Brandon Schrepf ripped a double down the left-field line to score Seth Johnson in his first start in a Trojan uniform.
Finally, in the seventh inning, Stearns picked up his second RBI of the game with a double, making it 5-3 where it would finish.
Marquez Oates would come in and pick up his second save of the season and put Troy back in the win column.
Up Next: The series wraps up tomorrow, Sunday, February 26, as the Trojans look to win the series.
