Â
TROY, Ala. – First-year Troy football head coach Jon Sumrall announced Tuesday the Trojans' 15 spring practice dates. The Trojans hit the practice fields beginning Tuesday, March 22 before culminating with the annual T-Day Spring Game on Saturday, April 23. Full details about T-Day, including kickoff time, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Â
"We're excited to build the foundational pieces from a football perspective," Sumrall said. "We are going to focus on the fundamentals that will provide cornerstones for our players' development as we move forward in the schemes that we're going to implement in all three phases of the game. I'm really excited about watching our guys compete and learning how to play the game with detail, strain and finish."
Â
Practices are scheduled for every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the exception of a Friday-night practice in The Vet on April 15. All the remainder of Troy's spring practices are scheduled to take place in the morning.
Â
Troy returns 10 starters on offense, including All-Sun Belt selections in left tackle Austin Stidham, receiver Tez Johnson and running back Kimani Vidal. Defensively, the Trojans return nine starters led by All-American linebacker Carlton Martial and All-American bandit Javon Solomon. Additionally, the Troy defense returns All-Sun Belt selections Will Choloh, KJ Robertson, Reddy Steward, Richard Jibunor and TJ Harris.
Â
"Every player is getting a fresh start, and we want to see everybody work to give themselves an opportunity to earn playing time," Sumrall said. "No job is set in concrete, and every group from quarterback to the kickers are going to be evaluated in every manner you can to give our team the best opportunity to be successful."
Â
The Trojans are coming off a season where they ranked 24th nationally in total defense, 15th in turnovers forced, 10th in tackles for loss and 11th in sacks. Martial finished sixth in the country, averaging 10.6 tackles per game, while Solomon was seventh with 0.92 sacks and ninth with 1.5 tackles for loss per game.
Â
"This is going to be a big spring for our program because we're going to be implementing a lot of new aspects in all three phases of the game," Sumrall said. "Our staff is going to have to be great teachers and give everyone on the roster a chance to develop individually and identify what our identity is going to be as we move forward into the season. We're going to install the foundational pieces of our scheme in the spring and continue to add throughout the summer and the fall. We want to move as fast as we can without slowing our players down."
Â
Troy opens the 2022 season at Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 3, before the home opener against Alabama A&M the following weekend (Sept. 10).
