TROY, Ala. – After powering Troy to a 5-1 week, Leanna Johnson and Kelly Horne swept the Sun Belt Pitcher and Player of the Week awards, the league office announced Tuesday.
Â
"I'm very proud of Kelly and Leanna for earning these awards," co-interim head coach Taylor Smartt said. "They are both very deserving and are using their experience to their advantage. They both are competitors that don't chase accolades but choose to focus on improving their craft daily to help this team!"
Â
After batting above .600 for the second consecutive week, Kelly Horne earns the first weekly honor of her career. The junior recorded six extra-base hits with four walks and a pair of home runs.
Â
The Tallahassee, Fla., native also tallied seven walks, including an intentional walk to put the tying run at the plate against Ole Miss.
On Friday, Horne tied the game against Ole Miss with an RBI single and set Anslee Finch up for the eventual game-winner. On the week, Horne recorded an impressive 1.250 slugging percentage and a .739 on-base percentage.
Â
Leanna Johnson earned her second consecutive Sun Pitcher of the Week after picking up a trio of wins.
Â
The Trojan ace tossed her first no-hitter of the season and second of her career on Friday, downing Eastern Kentucky, who made an NCAA Regional appearance last season.
Â
Johnson followed the no-no with a win against SEC foe Ole Miss on Saturday. She also picked up her first save of the season after tossing two shutout innings to solidify Troy's win over Nicholls on Saturday.
Â
On the week, Johnson fanned 41 batters over 26 innings of work. She pinned opponents to a .191 batting average and recorded a 1.62 ERA.
Â
Johnson and Horne will return to action on Friday in the Carolina Classic. Troy opens play at Beckham Field against Miami (OH) at 2:30 p.m.
