TROY, Ala. – After playing its first seven games of the season on the road, the Troy women's basketball team dropped its home opener to the Tulane Green wave 103-100 in double overtime at Trojan Arena on Wednesday night.
The Trojans lose their third-straight game and fall to 3-5 on the year. Troy dropped the first game of the season at home after going 12-2 last season. Tulane, meanwhile, improves to 6-3 and rebounds after a loss to LSU.
Three Trojans captured double-doubles in the game against Tulane as Nia Daniel, Ja'Mia Hollings, and Tai'Sheka Porchia reached the individual feat. Makayia Hallmon fell four assists shy of joining the group of Trojans to net a double-double.
Daniel captured a career-high 28 points in the contest against the Green Wave on Wednesday and was one of three players to record at least 10 rebounds. Hollings (19), Porchia (17), and Hallmon (16), joined Daniel in recording at least 10 points.
Troy was able to erase a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. With time expiring in the final period, an out-of-bounds play from Jada Walton found Daniel all alone in front of the net to send the game to overtime tied at 85.
After a 7-0 run from Tulane ended with the Green Wave knocking down two free throws with nine seconds on the clock, the Trojans needed another miracle and got it from Hollings, who hit an acrobatic 3-pointer to send the game to a second overtime as time expired.
Troy was unable to hold the Tulane offense at bay as they had for the last three periods of play in the second overtime. The Green Wave was able to outscore the Trojans by three to cap off a dramatic win on the road.
The Trojans fell behind early in the contest, getting outscored to begin the game 24-17 through the first 10 minutes. The Trojans rebounded with a dominant second quarter to take a 44-41 lead into the halftime break.
Tulane, however, would storm back to have an incredible third period against the Trojans. The Green Wave did not miss a shot until the two-minute mark of the third quarter. A great third found Tulane with a 20-point lead over Troy in the final regulation frame.
The Trojans will continue their three-game homestand on Saturday when they host Mercer at Trojan Arena. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. while the Troy men's squad will play 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's action.
