OAHU, Hawaii – Despite Makayia Hallmon's and Ja'Mia Hollings's career efforts, the Troy Trojans fell to Washington State 87-72 on Monday night in the North Shore Classic Finale. Washington State took the title via tiebreaker, and all three teams finished 1-1.
The Trojans fall back to .500 with a 3-3 mark in 2022-23 and will finish their four-game swing through the west coast with a 1-3 record. Washington State, meanwhile, improves to 4-1 on the year after going 1-1 in Hawaii.
Hollings led all scorers in Monday's action after registering a career-high 27 points against the Cougars. The junior from West Point, Mississippi, was able to add seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Hollings' teammate Hallmon also netted a career-high in points against Washington State in Hawaii as the Louisiana transfer added 22 of her own points to the Troy total. She went 9-16 from the field.
The Trojans made a valiant effort in the third quarter to come back in the game against Washington State. Troy outscored the Cougars 22-10 in the third period and cut the deficit to as many as two. Troy held Washington State to just two field goals in the third.
Despite Troy's stellar defense in the third quarter, Washington State would respond with an offensive and defensive outburst of their own as they were able to outscore Troy 23-13 to take their eventual 87-72 win.
The first quarter was played evenly between the two teams, and about seven minutes into the opening frame, Nia Daniel and the Trojans extended their lead to six after a jumper from the Alabama transfer. Washington State, however, would finish the opening quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 25-22 lead into the second period.
The second frame was not too kind to the Trojans offensively, as an influx of players from Troy was unable to contain the Cougar offense. Washington State was able to outscore the Trojans 29-15 to set up an epic comeback attempt from Troy in the third quarter.
The Trojans will conclude their season-opening seven-game road trip after the Thanksgiving break. On December 1, the Trojans will travel to Fayetteville to take on assistant coach Chelsea Dungee's alma mater, Arkansas, at 7 p.m.
