Women’s Tennis Wraps up Georgia Southern Fall Shootout as Newcomers Claim First Career Victories

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Troy women's tennis completed its first fall tournament on Sunday afternoon, competing against Kennesaw State, Mercer and Emory at the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout in the Wallis Tennis Center.

Over three days, newcomers Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva seized their first career singles and doubles victory as Troy went 7-13 in singles and 2-7 in doubles.

The Trojans opened their weekend on Friday against the Owls with little success. KSU took it to the Trojans, winning quickly over Kristina Kukaras, Avdeeva and Andrea Widing.

Guirguis was the first Trojan of the fall tournament schedule to secure a match victory which marks her first career victory. The freshman seized the first set, 6-1, before falling short in the second, 6-7 (5). The last set saw the Egypt native sail away with the win, 6-1.

Saturday pitted the Trojans against the Bears of Mercer in a grudge match that saw team captain Olivia Elliott grabs her first singles victory of the year, 7-5, 7-5 – only Trojan to win a singles match over Mercer.

Doubles saw last year's Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year, Hagar Amin, return to winning ways alongside Guirguis. The dynamic duo from Egypt captures the 6-4 victory for Troy's first doubles victory of 2022-23.

Sunday saw Troy dominate the Eagles of Emory in five singles and one doubles match. Guirguis picked up her second singles victory of the weekend, 6-2, 6-1.

Franziska Ahrend (6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (7)), Kukaras (6-0, 7-5), Elliott (6-3, 6-1) and Avdeeva (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) followed suit in singles – Avdeeva's first collegiate match victory.

Avdeeva continued her momentum in doubles with Chiara Desia Dabarno as they claimed Troy's second doubles victory of the weekend, 6-4.
