TROY, Ala. – The Trojans continued their unbeaten streak against Marshall after a straight-set sweep over the Thundering Herd (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) Friday night from Trojan Arena. In the victory, Julia Brooks finished with 12 kills putting her at 1000 kills in her career, becoming the 12th Trojan to accomplish the feat.
"We talked about having a fresh start, and we came out with good poise and discipline," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We have to continue to have confidence and consistency as we prepare for the rest of the conference slate. Putting together some excellent games in a row will help us get to where we want to be in November."
It was Troy's (10-8, 4-2) first weekend in which they took both games from their opponent. Tori Hester finished with her third consecutive double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs, Amara Anderson had a match-high 34 assists, and Jaci Mesa recorded 13 digs on the night.
Marshall continues to find it hard in their new conference to win as they fall to 7-11 and 1-5 in the Sun Belt. The Herd didn't have a single player with double-digit kills, with Macy McElhaney finishing with seven. Brynn Brown had 17 assists, while Marshall hit .124 on the night.
Set One: The two teams battled early as the set saw a 7-7 tie before Brooks gave Troy the lead that would last the rest of the set with a kill. The Trojans had a match-high 15 kills hitting at a .464 clip. Troy would see an eight-point lead, with Halston Hillier picking up her fifth kill. Troy secured the last three points with Kills from Books and Amiah Butler before Caroline capped off the set with an ace.
Set Two: A much closer second set saw Marshall battle back multiple times from being down three points, fighting off three straight set points making 24-23. Butler, who finished with seven kills, gave Troy a two-set advantage with a thundering hit.
Set Three: It wasn't the best set attacking for either team, as Troy finished with .083 and Marshall .097. Hester had six kills in the set, and after a service ace from Isabella Mitchell, Troy had an 11-1 lead. However, Marshall never got closer than five points as Troy was able to come up on top of a couple of long rallies to earn their third sweep of the season, and for the first time, they took both games from a conference opponent.
Up Next: Troy travels to Jonesboro, Ark., next week for a conference matchup with the Red Wolves from Oct. 14-15.
