TROY, Ala – Senior day was made a bit more special Saturday afternoon as the Trojans, for the first time since 1994, won their ninth straight match of the season and tied the program record after defeating South Alabama in four sets (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19) from Trojan Arena.
"We showed a lot of composure, and I'm super proud of how we competed," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Our preparation started early in the week for the emotion of this game with a lot of the line. We talked about being authentically Troy volleyball; we were just ourselves out there, which allowed us to find success this weekend."
The weekend sweep of South Alabama makes it the first time Troy has taken both regular season matches from the Jaguars since the 2020 season. With 10 conference wins thus far, the Trojans have also tied the program record for most conference wins in a season for the third time, reaching the mark in a shortened 2020 season and the first time coming in 2012.
Tori Hester remained the Trojans (15-8, 9-2) offensive leader with a match-high 21 kills and 12 digs, giving her a fourth straight double and double and 13 on the year. With 45 total assists, Amara Anderson had more than the entire Jaguar team, who finished with 44.
Despite having 14 blocks on the afternoon, South Alabama (14-9, 8-3) hit .194 and was led by Maddie Sobeleski in both kills with 14 and digs with 15.
Set One: The Trojans picked up right where they left off after last night, seeing only two early ties. Troy had a 15-10 lead at the media timeout and would maintain that cushion until South Alabama got within two points at 23-21. Five different Trojans saw at least one kill go down as Hester, who had five in the set, finished the set off with one to give Troy a match lead.
Set Two: The second set saw 11 tie scores which were the most in the match. The turning point in the set for Troy came when the Trojans found themselves down 14-17 before rattling off seven straight points to take a 21-17 lead. The Jaguars got back within one point before Amiah Butler and Hester closed out the set with kills, giving Troy their second straight game with a two-point advantage.
Set Three: South Alabama salvaged a set as the Trojans connected for a match low 14 kills on .111 hitting. Troy battled all set long but was never able to get back within five points of the visitors, who won the third set 25-20 to avoid the sweep.
Set Four: The fourth set saw the Trojans total 15 kills for the third time in the match. It was a back-and-forth affair as both teams were tied 10-10 before Butler broke the deadlock for good. Troy would eventually see a six-point lead at 20-14 and would respond to every Jaguar point with their own before Butler closed the match with a kill and sent the Troy faithful home happy.
Up Next: The Trojans begin a four-game road trip in San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State next week, starting on November 4th. The two teams now sit alone atop the Sun Belt West standings.
