Simkin Wins Flight, Martinez Serrano Advances to Finals

TROY, Ala. – Nicolas Simkin won the Gold Flight at the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic and Mario Martinez Serrano advanced to the finals of the main flight at the Mercer Gridiron Classic, as Troy men's tennis enjoyed another successful day on the courts on Saturday.

Simkin defeated Chattanooga's Simon Labbe on his home court, 6-4, 7-5, to claim the flight title, while Martinez Serrano knocked off top-seeded Raul Garcia from Kennesaw State in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals. Martinez Serrano will face his second straight Owl opponent when he takes on Hugo Salmeron in Sunday's finale.

Simkin was one of three Trojans who took home victories on Saturday in Chattanooga. Freshman Yeray Andres Pastor knocked off Chattanooga's all-conference selection Kerim Hyatt in a three-set thriller, 7-6, 4-6, 11-9, while Francisco Erramuspe defeated North Alabama's Guilherme Diniz, 6-0, 7-6.

Andres Pastor and Simkin also split a pair of doubles matches against two different opponents from Austin Peay.

Over at Mercer, Carles Anton dropped his semifinal match against Salmeron. However, Anton and Martinez Serrano went 2-0 in doubles on the day with wins over George College & State University and Georgia State.
