Anton, Martinez Serrano, Simkin Unblemished to Open Weekend

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team is split over two locations this weekend and a trio of Trojans had solid early returns winning two matches each on Friday. Mario Martinez Serrano and Carles Anton advanced to the semifinals of the Mercer Gridiron Classic, while Nicolas Simkin won both his matches at the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic.

Martinez Serrano and Anton are a win away from squaring off against each other for the main draw singles title at the Mercer Gridiron Classic. Anton knocked off opponents from Georgia Southern and Mercer in straight sets, while Martinez Serrano, Troy's star freshman, needed three sets to win his opener over Middle Georgia before a straight-sets win over Georgia State's All-Sun Belt selection in Robert Grinvalds.

Both Trojans are paired against opponents from Kennesaw State in the semifinals, which open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Over in Chattanooga, Simkin defeated his North Alabama opponent, 6-4, 6-4, to open the day and moved on after his second round opponent retired in the second set. Yeray Andres Pastor faced a similar fate winning in the second round over his UAB opponent by retirement after he opened the day with a tough three-set loss to hometown Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez.

Francisco Erramuspe matched up with a pair of Blazers from UAB and came out of the day with a split, winning his first match 4-6, 6-0, 10-7.
