TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Troy fell in a tightly contested series to No. 20 Florida State Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee. The Trojans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but ultimately fell 4-2 to the Seminoles in the finale.
Rigsby Mosley (2-4, HR) and Clay Stearns (3-3, BB) each posted multi-hit games while Bay Witcher struck out a career-high nine batters and opened the game with four scoreless frames in a five-inning outing.
Mosley's solo home run, his first of the season, came on the first pitch he saw and got the Trojans on the board first in the top of the opening frame. Troy (21-21) doubled its lead in the third inning when Drew Frederic led off with a single and Logan Cerny doubled, then reached third on a Seminole error, scoring Frederic.
Florida State (23-16) got on the board with a double and an RBI-single in the fifth inning to cut into the Trojan lead, 2-1. Troy appeared to get out of the inning on a double play, but the call was overturned after review and a second Seminole run tied the game later in the inning.
Two Seminole solo home runs, one in the sixth and one in the eighth, gave Florida State its final 4-2 lead.
The difference in the game came with runners in scoring position as Troy finished 0-for-5 while Florida State went 2-for-6. The Trojans left eight base runners stranded in the contest.
Seminole starer Conor Grady struck out 13, but it was reliever Tyler Ahearn (2-1) who got the win. Jack Anderson earned his second save of the year for Florida State.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Our team played well. I hate that they didn't get rewarded with a series win, but Florida State earned the win today. Bay Witcher was great in the start, he gave us a chance to win. Ultimately, we couldn't do enough offensively throughout the series to win two out of three. I'm really proud of how we played here. We played the No. 20 team in the country toe-to-toe for three straight games. Give Florida State credit, they won the series two out of three."
