TROY, Ala. – Despite a nine-strikeout performance by Leanna Johnson, Troy drops a nail bitter, wire-to-wire contest against Texas State, 4-3, Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
Texas State (32-9, 13-5 Sun Belt) struck first in the top of the second when Sara Vanderford hit a long ball over the center field wall.
After the Trojans (32-11, 15-4 Sun Belt) went down in order in the bottom half of the second, the Bobcats took a 2-0 advantage with a double steal that plated a run.
Troy cut the deficit in the bottom of the fourth when Libby Baker roped a double to right-center to plate Katie Webb, who led off with a double.
Leanna Johnson (18-6) retired the side in the top of the fifth to bring Troy's offense back to the plate.
After a leadoff walk, Texas State called Daliliah Barrera in in relief for Jessica Mullins (17-6). A pair of singles by Jade Sinness and Katie Webb and a sacrifice fly by Katie Lively plated the go ahead for the Trojans.
After a quiet sixth frame, Baylee Lemons hit a single to score the tying run from third in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs, a controversial check swing call kept Kylie George alive at the plate. George sent the following pitch to shallow center field, plating the eventual game-winning run.
After reentering in the bottom of the sixth, Mullins retired the side to secure the victory for Texas State.
Johnson suffered the loss for the Trojans despite the nine-strikeout performance in the circle.
