Trojans Drop Midweek Tilt to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Troy fell to Jacksonville State in a rivalry tilt Tuesday night at Jim Case Stadium. The Trojans scattered eight hits and left nine on base in a 6-1 defeat to the Gamecocks.
Dalton Sinquefield recorded his fourth multi-hit outing in the last six games with a 2-for-4 performance while Easton Kirk batted in the Trojans' only run of the evening. The Trojan arms combined for 10 strikeouts in the contest, including a career-high six from freshman Ryan Pettys.
Jacksonville State was responsible for the game's first four runs as the Gamecocks scored one in the first and third innings and two more in the fourth.
Nic Nolan connected on a hard-hit double to lead off the fifth inning and Kirk singled to bring him home to get the Trojans on the board. Troy had runners on second and third with one out after a Jesse Hall sac bunt, but were unable to do any more damage in the inning.
Drew Frederic crushed a ball to left-center field with two outs and a pair of Trojans on base just before the stretch, but a spectacular diving grab by the Gamecock left fielder robbed the senior of a hit and two RBIs.
Jacksonville State would add a run in both the sixth and the seventh innings to seal the 6-1 win.
Pettys (0-1) suffered the loss for the Trojans while Kyle Luigs (2-1) was the pitcher of record for the Gamecocks.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It was not a good performance tonight. We didn't swing the bats well enough to win. We did some good things pitching in the game, got some guys in there that hadn't seen time in a while. At the end of the day, one run on eight hits is not strong enough to win a game."
