TROY, Ala. – True Freshman Garrett Gainous was dominant as he tossed 7.1 scoreless innings in a series-opening shutout win for Troy Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field. Runs were at a premium in a pitcher's duel as the Trojans' downed Appalachian State, 2-0.
Gainous (6-3) logged his second consecutive scoreless outing behind seven strikeouts and just two walks while only allowing three hits. The righty improved his shutout streak to 16.1 innings, the longest since Levi Thomas' streak of 19 innings last season.
Marquez Oates entered in relief of Gainous with two Mountaineers on base and one out in the eighth. After App State loaded the bases on a hit batter, Oates slammed the door shut with a swing-and-miss strikeout to end the threat. Oates then struck out the side in the ninth to clinch the win and his third save of the season.
Caleb Bartolero doubled twice in a 2-for-4 outing while Dalton Sinquefield finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Both Trojans have recorded a multi-hit outing in five of the last seven games.
Troy manufactured the game's first run in the second inning after Nic Nolan advanced a pair of Trojan base runners with a sac bunt, allowing Jesse Hall to bring in a run with a sac-fly. The Trojans added a second run in the bottom of the seventh after Bartolero doubled to open the inning and Sinquefield brought him home with an RBI single.
Tyler Tuthill (2-4) wore the loss for App State after giving up two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.

"Really proud of the 2-0 win tonight. Garrett Gainous and Marquez Oates were terrific on the mound, I was really proud of the way they competed. We had enough offense tonight to get a lead and keep it. We played great defense tonight all over the field. There were several great plays in the outfield, our infield play was clean and Clay Stearns did a great job behind the plate. It was a good overall team win."
