AUBURN, Ala. -- Led by thrower Michael Alvernaz and distance runner Macki Walsh, the Troy Trojans completed day action of the two-day War Eagle Invite, Friday night at the Hutsell-Rosen Track. Â
Â
Consisting of mainly the field events and the specialty and distance running events, day one action included the hammer throw, long jump and javelin field events. The track events included the 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m.
Â
Competing in the hammer throw against competitors from schools like Auburn, Cincinnati, Memphis, Mississippi State Alvernaz shined once again, turning in a 65.84m score en root to his fourth victory of the season in the hammer throw.
Â
The Trojans second big performance of the opening day of competition came from Walsh, who turned in a career-best 16:44.32 in the women's 5000m to win her third consecutive 5000m individual title. Walsh shaved nearly 40 seconds of her previous career-best time of 17:12.74, set back on Mar. 5 at the Jaguar Opener.
Â
Other opening day highlights included Jakyryn Davis finishing fifth in the men's long jump, London Wooley finishing fifth in the long jump and Connor Brookman and Marek Taskar finishing fifth and sixth in the javelin.
Â
Taskar set a career-best in the event for the second consecutive weekend. At last weekend's Crimson Tide Invitational, the sophomore recorded a score of 59.17m. Tonight the specialist eclipsed 60m for the first time recording a score of 61.18m.
Â
The Trojans will return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of the War Eagle Invite. Action begins Saturday morning with the women's pole vault event at 11 a.m. and includes the remainder of the field events (high jump, triple jump, discus and shot put). The action on the track begins at Noon with the women's 4X100 relay and concludes with the men's 4X400 relay at around 4:30 p.m.
Â
DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD MARC DAVIS:
"We definitely had a great start to the night. Michael Alvernaz started off with a win in the hammer throw. And then we had two finalists in the Hammer which was great. We also had a big win for Macki Walsh in the 5000m as she set a big PR. She has been steadily improving from race to race. We also had a strong showing in the Javelin as well. Hopefully tomorrow we can continue to have stand out performances."
