ATLANTA – For the first time since 2005, the Trojans have swept the opening two weekends of conference play after downing Georgia State, 7-1, in the Sunday finale at Bob Heck Field.
Last weekend, Troy (23-6, 6-0 Sun Belt) swept the first weekend of conference play, dropping UT Arlington in each game of the series. The Trojans carried their momentum into the second weekend and completed the sweep of the Panthers (12-11, 0-3 Sun Belt) to earn their first back-to-back sweeps to open conference play since 2005.
Troy struck first in the opening frame utilizing a pair of Georgia State errors, a walk and a wild pitch to plate the first run of the contest. With a runner on second, Libby Baker hit a sacrifice fly scoring another run for the Trojans.
Leanna Johnson (12-3) retired nine consecutive Panthers, holding Georgia State without a base runner through the first three innings of the matchup.
Ashlan Ard tacked on another run in the top of the fourth with a single to left that scored Candela Figueroa, who led off with a walk.
Daisy Hess doubled in the bottom of the fourth to break the Panthers' hitless streak but was left stranded.
A quiet pair of frames sent the contest into the top of the final inning where Troy broke the game wide open plating four runs off four hits to seal the game away.
A pair of singles by Jade Sinness and Katie Lively scored Logan Calhoun, who reached on an error. After another single by Katie Webb, a base clearing double smashed by Kelly Horne solidified Troy's sixth conference win.
Johnson earned the victory scattering four hits and a walk while fanning eight Panthers.
Emily Buck (3-2) suffered the loss for Georgia State after allowing seven runs, five hits and five walks.
QUOTABLE – Head Coach Beth Mullins
"Anytime you can get a sweep in Sun Belt play, you are going to be really happy. Throughout all three games, I just thought we stayed consistent and mature on offense, defense and in the circle."
