TROY, Ala. – After a 14-day hiatus, Troy's Leanna Johnson fired a two-hit shutout to down Georgia Southern, 5-0, in the opening game of the weekend Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
The Trojans (23-6, 7-0 Sun Belt) put on show in front of their home crowd after spending the last 23 days away from the Troy Softball Complex.
After Johnson (13-3) retired the side in the opening frame to bring Troy's offense to the plate, Katie Lively kickstarted a two-run inning with a double to left. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Anslee Finch. Finch continued the surge roping a single to left to put the Trojans on the board early.
After a scoreless second frame, Candela Figueroa smashed a triple plating a pair in the bottom of the third to give Troy a 4-0 lead.
Troy's scoring was capped off in the bottom of the fourth when Jade Sinness smashed a solo shot over the right center wall, her fifth home run of the season.
Allyssah Mullis broke Georgia Southern's hitless streak in the top of the fifth frame with a single to center that Sinness dove for, but was unable to secure before the ball hit the ground. After the single, Johnson fanned the final two batters to strand the runner.
Neither side saw any production at the plate in the sixth sending the game into the final frame. Mullis hit a two-out infield single, but the Eagles last ditch effort fell short as Johnson fanned the final batter of the contest.
Kyleigh Richardson (2-4) suffered the loss for the Eagles (7-15, 0-6 Sun Belt) allowing a pair of runs off two hits and two walks.
Quotable – Head Coach Beth Mullins
"I'm just really proud of the girls. We haven't been home [on a weekend] since February, so to come out on their home field and play very solid Troy softball made me proud. Leanna pitched a great game, we played great defense behind her and then we had timely hitting which is everything we ask them to do. I'm excited to get back out there tomorrow and play two more."
