TROY, Ala. – Behind the strength of a five-run first inning and three hits off the bat of Logan Cerny, Troy bested Georgia Southern, 11-8, Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field to even the Sun Belt Conference series at a game each.
Troy (9-9, 1-1 Sun Belt) led 6-0 after two innings of play before the teams traded two-spots over the later frames. The double-digit scoring outburst was the fourth of the season and second consecutive on a Saturday for the Trojans.
Cerny tripled and singled twice in addition to drawing a pair of walks, stealing two bases and driving home a run to lead a 13-hit Trojan attack. Drew Frederic, Rigsby Mosley and Donovan Whibbs each added a pair of hits. Mosley drove home three runs while Caleb Bartolero and William Sullivan both plated a pair.
Frederic extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first and Cerny plated him four pitches later with his first triple of the season. Mosley drove home Cerny, stole second and scored on a two-out single to left by Jesse Hall.
Sullivan drove a two-out, two-strike pitch into center field to score Hall and Dalton Sinquefield to cap the five-run first.
Troy's freshman right-hander Garrett Gainous (3-1) held Georgia Southern (10-7, 1-1) off the board for three frames before yielding four runs – two earned – on eight hits over 5.2 innings of work in the winning effort.
Mason McWhorter paced the Eagles with a 3-for-5 afternoon while Noah Ledford walked three times and hit a pair of late home runs. Georgia Southern used seven different pitchers in the game after starter Chase Dollander (2-1) was ineffective as he allowed six runs on eight hits in just two innings of work.
Georgia Southern plated a pair of runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to keep the pressure on the Troy offense. The Trojans responded with two of their own in the fourth and sixth and one in the seventh and never relinquished the lead.
Sunday's rubber match in the Sun Belt opening series is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Drew Frederic moved into sole possession of second place passing All-American Adam Bryant with 185 career runs scored after the Trojan shortstop scored three times Saturday afternoon. He is just five runs shy of Matt Sanders' school record.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Mark Smartt
"It was a great start to the game and we haven't done that in a while. We swung the bats well in that first inning. Their starter has a great arm and his stuff was really good but we were able to get some balls off the bat. Jesse Hall had a huge hit in that inning to score a run which led to another two-out single from William Sullivan. We didn't swing the bat great the rest of the game but we did some really aggressive things on the bases today to put pressure on them and we were rewarded with a nice Saturday win."
