AUBURN, Ala. -- Paced by its distance runners and its throwers, the Troy track and field program closed out a strong opening day of the Tiger Classic Friday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
The meet features multiple power-five competitors from schools like Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Louisville, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
The Trojans started the day off strong in the 1500m and 500m events, as Gemma Finch (4:32.17) ran a personal-best in the 1500 to finish fifth.
Troy's best performances came in the 5000m as senior Macki Walsh (17:14.73) and freshman Grace Booher (17:29.69) finished with the top two times in the event. Walsh and Booher were two of four Trojans who finished in the top-eight in the 5000m. Walsh's time in the 5000m was also a career-best time.
Other opening day highlights for the Trojans included Michael Alvernaz (65.75m) finishing second in the men's hammer throw and sophomore Cole Stewart finishing fourth in the javelin throw.
The Trojans close out action at the Tiger Classic tomorrow. The first event of the jam-packed day begins at 11:30 a.m. from the Hutsell-Rosen Track.
DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD MARC DAVIS:
"Today was a great start to the weekend. We had some very good performances across the board. We saw Mack Walsh run a personal best in 5k, and Gemma Finch do the same in the 1500m. We also had a very strong showing in the Men's Hammer for Michael Alvernaz and Connor Brookman against tough competition. Tomorrow will be a test of our mettle against many SEC schools. It will be fun and I hope the athletes rise to the occasion."
