TROY, Ala. β Troy picked up a pair of wins in a Saturday doubleheader against Youngstown State at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans downed the Penguins 8-2 in game one of the day before an emphatic 13-6 victory in game two.
Β
With two doubles and three home runs in the night cap, Logan Cerny tied a school record for total bases (16) in a single game set by Scott Ates in 1990. Cerny is the first Trojan since Jo-El Bennett in 2014 to homer three times in the same game.
Β
The Trojans combined for 25 hits on the day, including seven home runs and four doubles. Cerny (3), Easton Kirk (1), Dalton Sinquefield (1), Drew Frederic (1) and Clay Stearns (1) all homered on the day.
Β
Troy is hitting a Sun Belt-best .358 as a squad and its 10 doubles lead the league so far this season. This marks Troy's third 3-0 start in the last four seasons.
Β
Game One | Troy 8, YSU 2
Drew Frederic's 4-for-5, three RBI outing highlighted the day's first contest. After Youngstown State's Turner Grau struck first with a solo shot in the second, Frederic hit a three-run, opposite field home run to get Troy on the board in the third.
Β
Clay Stearns's hot-hitting weekend continued with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. His second home run of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Trojan advantage to three.
Β
After the Penguins tallied a run in the top half of the fifth, Reed Smith placed a perfect sac-bunt down the first-base line to score Mock. Stearns then roped a single to left to bring Nic Nolan home, his second RBI of the game.
Β
Nolan finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI, which came in the bottom of the seventh.
Β
Freshman Garrett Gainous went five innings, struck out five and allowed one run to earn the win in his first career start. Marquez Oates notched the save, his first as a Trojan, after allowing one hit and striking out five in 2.1 innings.
Β
Collin Floyd was tagged with the loss for Youngstown State after he gave up five earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
Β
Game Two | Troy 13, YSU 6
The depth of Troy's lineup showed in game two of the day when the five through nine hole starters combined to go 11-for-18 with 12 RBIs, five home runs and three doubles.
Β
Cerny's 5-for-5 performance highlighted the game while Nolan (2-for-3), Sinquefield (2-for-4) and Rigsby Mosley (2-for-5) also finished with multi-hit games.
Β
Troy got to work early in the game with back-to-back home runs from Cerny and Kirk in the second. A couple of wild pitches gave the Penguins a run in the third before a Cerny double scored Sinquefield to push the Trojan lead back to three.
Β
The Trojans put up six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Sinquefield and Cerny.
Β
Troy plated two runs in the sixth before Youngstown State showed signs of life with a pair of runs in both the eighth and the ninth innings. The Trojans held tough and secured a 13-6 victory over the Penguins.
Β
Bay Witcher looked solid in 6.0 innings, earning the win after striking out five and only giving up two runs. Travis Perry was the pitcher of record for Youngstown State after lasting just 3.2 innings and giving up 10 runs on 11 hits.
Β
Quotable β Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Sometimes you hit a lull in a doubleheader, I didn't think our team did that today. I'm really proud of our team for staying with it. We did a lot of great things today, pitched well and competed well. We've got work to do to finish off the weekend. I'm proud of the 3-0 start, but we've got work to do tomorrow."
Β
On Logan Cerny
"What a performance, my gosh. You don't see a lot of three-homer games, let alone a three-home run, two double, 16 total base games. I'm really proud of him, mainly because three of the hits happened with two strikes. That's something we've been working really hard on. You see what he can do when he makes solid contact, he's a tremendous player."
Β
On Garrett Gainous' first-career win
"Garrett [Gainous] got his first college win today and we saw the first-inning jitters, but he got out of it unscathed. The next four innings I thought he was really good. He competed well and throws multiple pitches for strikes. It was really good to get that first one under his belt."
