Troy Hosts Youngstown State to Open 2021 Campaign

TROY, Ala. – After a 346-day hiatus, Troy Baseball is finally set to return to action as it welcomes the Youngstown State Penguins to Riddle-Pace Pace Field for Opening Weekend. The four-game series will begin Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.

Troy returns a loaded roster, including everyone from last season's Opening Day batting order. The Trojans return 97% of their at-bats and 99% of their hit total from last season, a year in which Troy ranked eighth nationally with 179 hits before the season ended early.
Two Trojans garnered Preseason All-American honors in Drew Frederic and Caleb Bartolero. Frederic was placed on the NCBWA's second team while Bartolero received Collegiate Baseball second-team honors and NCBWA third-team recognition.
Troy placed a league-best five players on the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team, the league office announced Monday. Lance Johnson (relief pitcher), Bartolero (catcher), William Sullivan (first base), Frederic (shortstop) and Rigsby Mosley (outfield) were all recognized.
Orlando Ortiz will get the start on the mound on Opening Night. In four starts last season, the Miami, Fla. native compiled a 3.13 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 23.0 innings pitched.
The Trojans return a wealth of experienced arms behind Ortiz in guys like Johnson, Max Newton, Ryan Fultz, Matt Snell, Tyson Ellis, Bay Witcher, Marquez Oates, and DJ Wilkinson, who all saw considerable playing time during the shortened 2020 season and continue to develop under pitching coach Matt Hancock.

Know Your Foe
- At 7-7, Youngstown State was off to its best start through 14 games since going 8-6 in 2010 when the 2020 season was cut short. The Penguins won five of their final seven games.
- Youngstown State was picked third in the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Preseason Poll.
- Senior LHP Colin Clark was named the Preseason Horizon League Pitcher of the Year by D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game. Clark led the Horizon League with 26 strikeouts and 26.2 innings pitched over four starts in 2020. He issued only three walks and opponents batted just .206 against him. He posted a 3.38 ERA, and he struck out at least seven batters in three of his four outings.
- All 12 games in the all-time series took place from 1995-97 when the two programs were both members of the Mid-Continent Conference.
