Leanna Johnson Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

TROY, Ala. – Following a perfect 2-0 weekend with wins over Ole Miss and Belmont, Leanna Johnson has been tabbed the first Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week of the 2021 season, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Brantley, Ala., native garnered the award after defeating SEC foe Ole Miss in the opening day of the Trojan Classic. Johnson sat down 11 Rebels en route to her 13th career double-digit strikeout performance. The sophomore fired a complete game three-hitter on Friday, pushing the Trojans to a victory over an SEC for the second consecutive season.
On Saturday, the sophomore picked up her second win of the season entering the matchup against Belmont in relief in the top of the fifth. Johnson retired nine of the final 10 batters of the game to secure Troy's third win of the weekend.
"I thought Leanna was excellent in the circle, and helped us have a great weekend as a team," head coach Beth Mullins said.
On the weekend, Johnson fanned 17 batters over 10 innings of work and allowed just four hits and an earned run.
Johnson and the Trojans return to action tomorrow, February 17 against Liberty. First pitch has been changed to 2 p.m.
