2/13/2021 8:37:00β―PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Ala. -- Despite 14 points and a career-best 18 rebounds from junior Zay Williams, the Troy Trojans fell to the South Alabama Jaguars Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
Β
The difference in the ballgame was the final nine minutes of the half, where the Trojans (10-12, 4-8 Sun Belt) were outscored 14-2.
Β
In the loss, freshman Duke Miles continued his strong play of late, contributing 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Β
After a Zay Williams triple gave the Trojans an early 3-0 lead, the Jaguars (14-8, 8-5) scored 15 of the next 20 points to take a 17-8 lead.
Β
Needing a run, Troy used a triple from Kam Woods to spark an 11-3 run that cut the South Alabama lead to just 20-19.
Then the shots stopped falling for Troy. Over the final 7:19 of the half, the Trojans missed their final 10 shots and a pair of free throws.
Β
The cold spell allowed South to extend its lead to 31-19 at the break.
Β
After halftime, the Trojans would respond, using back-to-back triples from Desmond Williams and Khalyl Waters to cut the South Alabama lead to just 33-29. The 10-2 run forced a timeout from the Jaguars.
Β
Following the timeout, South was able to regroup, scoring the next seven to increase their lead to 40-29 with 14:26 left.
Β
Troy again found a quick response, using an 8-0 run over the next 3:42 of the period to cut the Jags lead to just 40-37.
Β
With all of the momentum after the media timeout, the Trojans missed an and-one free throw that would have cut the South lead to just 40-38.
Β
After securing the rebound, South Alabama used a John Pettway layup to spark an 11-4 run over the next 5:06 that gave the visitors a 51-41 with 5:58.
Β
Troy tried to claw its way back into the game using a 7-2 run that was capped by another Waters triple, to cut the South Alabama lead to just five with 3:08 to play.
Β
On the ensuing Jags possession, Troy forced a missed shot from Tyreke Locure and secured a key defensive rebound, but a missed shot coupled with a Michael Flowers jumper gave the Jags a three-possession lead with just under two minutes to play.
Β
Troy cut the South lead to five with 61 seconds to play, but South used three late free throws to hold on for a 58-51 victory.
Β
The Trojans return to action Tuesday night when Georgia State visits Trojan Arena for a makeup game against the Panthers. Tip-off from Trojan Arena is set for 6 p.m.
Β
HEAD COACH SCOTT CROSS:
"I'm very disappointed in the way we played. We weren't quite locked-in mentally. We played hard but we made a lot of mental mistakes. I thought they were a little bit tougher than us and those plays dictated the outcome of the game. I was proud of our guys for fighting and cutting into their lead, but we just couldn't quite get over the hump and it's disappointing for South to come in here and escape with a win."
Β
On the first half struggles offensively:
"When Stamp went down with his second foul that killed us offensively because he's a post player who can really shoot. He knows our offense inside and out and makes it work. He spreads the defense. That really got us out of rhythm, and I didn't do a good job of putting our guys in positions offensively. They made some adjustments from the first game and we had no rhythm. We were shooting terrible shots. In the second half we shot better shots but it's disappointing we couldn't get it done." Β
