MOBILE, Ala. – The Trojans four-game win streak came to an end Saturday night after Troy fell to South Alabama in straight sets for the second time this year (12-25, 22-25, 21-25).
"Congrats to South on a good match tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "We had some opportunities in sets 2 and 3 that we could not quite capitalize on. "We have an important week ahead, and I'm looking forward to finishing strong."
Halston Hillier led Troy (15-10, 8-6), who tallied seven kills with a .538 hitting percentage. Amara Anderson totaled 25 assists which were her third-lowest tally of the season. The Trojans only recorded 31 digs, with Cheyenne Hayes leading the way with seven.
South Alabama (20-6, 13-1) had a .295 hitting percentage as a team and was led by Carissa Bradford, who had eight kills. Kailey Keeble led the match with 36 assists, while the Jaguars could come up with 11 blocks.
First Set: South Alabama was in control of the entity of the first set as there were no ties or lead changes. The Jaguars totaled 13 kills compared to the Trojan's seven. After scoring the first four points of the set, South Alabama would stretch their lead to six and then again to 10 and eventually finish the set on a seven-point run to put it out of reach for the Trojans.
Second Set: The Trojans showed fight and kept the set close as there were 14 ties and five lead changes. Troy would get out to an early 6-3 lead, but the Jaguars would come back to tie it, and the set would go back and forth with slight separation until the Jaguars would take a 21-19 lead. A couple of Troy attack errors saw the Trojans go down four and unable to return, giving South Alabama a two-set advantage.
Third Set: The Third set was the Trojan's best set as they had 12 kills. Fourteen tie scores and ten lead changes throughout, with the two teams trading points to the media timeout. The Jaguars were once again able to finish the set off on a four point set run to close out the game and give the Jaguars the victory.
Up Next: The Trojans will close out the regular season with a road trip to Georgia to take on Georgia Southern and Georgia State before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
