Men's Golf Makes Huge Strides in Fall Season

TROY, Ala. – Under the direction of new head coach Forrest Schultz, the Troy men's golf team posted a tremendous start to its 2021-22 season with a solid run through its five fall tournaments.
The Trojans posted a 40-36-1 head-to-head record in the fall, which already represents a nine-win improvement from last year's overall head-to-head mark. Additionally, the Trojans posted five rounds under par as a team; Troy had four combined team rounds in the red the last three seasons.
"From day one, we talked about what the expectation was going to be and how we were going to get there," Schultz said. "We talked about how it was going to take a lot of hard work and discipline for everyone associated with the team to get where we want to be with this program.
"We've got a bunch of DI golfers in this program and shooting even par has to be the bare minimum, so that's where we started," Schultz said. "Once we shot even par, we moved to shooting a stroke or two below, and finally, at the Little Rock tournament we were 8-under as a team."
Troy fired an 8-under 280 as a club in the second round of the Little Rock Invitational, with all four Trojan counters shooting under par. It was Troy's lowest round since a 9-under 279 in the fall of 2014 at The Intercollegiate and just four shots off the school record.
"Our next step is to keep our foot on the pedal and pushing forward," Schultz said. "It was all about starting with the basics. We had to make sure that everyone from one through 12 on the lineup bought into what we are doing and our culture change on the golf course."
Individually, Will McFadden, Brantley Scott and George Burch all played within a stroke of par during the fall and combined for 16 of Troy's 21 individual rounds under par. McFadden played more than half (8-of-15) of his rounds in the red, while Scott, a true freshman, led Troy with four rounds in the 60s and six total under par.
"For us to be successful, we've got to have three guys rolling at the top of the lineup and steady support from the back of the lineup, and we've done that so far," Schultz said. "While Will, Brantley and George all had tremendous falls, Nicklas Borrmann and Jake Springer were also really strong and have a lot of firepower. It goes deeper than those five, with our guys in the six and seven spots going deep under par in qualifying events on some quality golf courses."
Troy's 21 rounds under par match last year's total in half the number of rounds played, and the Trojans are more than nine shots better per round as a team when comparing stroke averages between the last two seasons.
The Trojans are off from competition until the end of February when they open the spring portion of their schedule at the Savannah Harbor Invite. The rest of their spring schedule takes them to the Gulf Coast Collegiate, Bash at the Beach, LaTour Intercollegiate and Boilermaker Invitational before the Sun Belt Championship in El Dorado, Arkansas.
