TROY, Ala. – Troy men's golf head coach Forrest Schultz announced Wednesday the signing of Will Simpson to a National Letter of Intent; he will join the Trojans beginning with the 2022-23 season.
"Will is going to be a great addition to our program," Schultz said. "He is a top-five player in the state of Iowa, who has a lot of firepower and the ability to take it low any day of the week. In addition, both of Will's parents are Troy alums, and they all bleed Trojan Cardinal."
Simpson won the Iowa Junior PGA Open Championship with a 9-under thanks to rounds of 66 and 69 in addition to taking home the individual title at the John Deere Classic Junior Open with a 4-under 140. The No. 113 ranked player nationally (class of 2022) and No. 4 player in Iowa by the American Junior Golf Association, Simpson tied for second at the AJGA UHY St. Louis Junior and won the Little Hawkeye Conference individual title by 22 shots playing for Pella High School.
Simpson joins a Troy program trending upwards after a successful first fall under Schultz. The Trojans posted a 40-36-1 head-to-head record in the fall, which already represents a nine-win improvement from last year's overall head-to-head mark. Additionally, the Trojans posted five rounds under par as a team; Troy had four combined team rounds in the red the last three seasons.
Troy's 21 rounds under par match last year's total in half the number of rounds played, and the Trojans are more than nine shots better per round as a team when comparing stroke averages between the last two seasons.
