TROY, Ala. – Troy track and field alumna Alexis Garrett has been named a conference-level nominee for the 2020 NCAA Women of the Year award, the national organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Garrett, Troy's 2019-20 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President and national representative, is one of 161 college athletes selected as a nominee from a record pool of 605 total applicants, 58 of which are Division I nominees.
A team captain and 2018 All-Sun Belt performer, Garrett found success at multiple Sun Belt Championships as she earned a bronze medal in the 60m hurdles at the 2018 indoor championship and a bronze at the outdoor championship in the 100m hurdles. In 2019 she added an additional bronze medal to her collection, with another strong showing in the 100m hurdles.
"Alexis continues to be a shining light for our institution and athletics department," Troy Director of Athletics Brent Jones said. "She is a leader in our community and among her peers on the track & field team and throughout all of our athletics programs. We are all so incredibly proud of Alexis not only for what she has already accomplished but for what we all know is in store for her in the future. This is a tremendous honor for a remarkable woman, and we couldn't be more excited to see Alexis represent Troy and the Sun Belt Conference for this national award."
The NCAA Woman of the Year program is rooted in Title IX and has recognized graduating female college athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
Conference nominations are forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee where the top 30 honorees, 10 from each division, will be announced in September. From there, the selection committee will narrow the pool to three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2020 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.
The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named this fall.
