TROY, Ala. -- The Troy Trojans and head coach Scott Cross announced the addition of Montgomery native Antwan Burnett Thursday morning.
Â
Burnett, a four-star prospect according to ESPN, joins Duke Miles, Rory Pantophlet, Kieffer Punter, Christian Turner and Kam Woods who signed with the Trojans last week.
Â
We are extremely excited to sign another great basketball player out of our own backyard in Montgomery, AL," head coach Scott Cross said. "AB is a 6'6" strong wing that is relentless attacking the basket, but he is also a very good 3-PT shooter. AB has also been a high-level football player throughout high school which has helped develop him into a tough guy on the basketball court. Coach Brian Williams at Lanier HS has developed AB into a force on the court that can score both inside and out. AB will give us a physical presence on the perimeter, and should cause a lot of matchup problems for opposing defenses."
Â
A 6'6" forward out of Montgomery, Burnett averaged over 22 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists for Sidney Lanier high school this past season. Â A 2,000-point scorer for the Poets, Burnett was a two-time All-Metro selection and is the schools all-time leading scorer.
Â
This season, Burnett was selected to the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game where he joined a pair of future Troy teammates in Woods and Miles. In the game, Burnett scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds earning MVP honors. The forward was an efficient 11-of-19 from the floor and hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
A two-sport athlete, Burnett starred on the gridiron throughout his high school career. After playing two seasons for the Poets football program, Burnett transferred to Carver high school for his junior year.
Â
The Montgomery native returned to Lanier for his junior basketball season, before transferring to American Collegiate Academy for his final football season. After a successful fall with the Pioneers, Burnett returned home to Lanier for his senior basketball season.
Â
"I think we have addressed every need for our basketball team with this outstanding group of players, Cross said last week. "My staff worked extremely hard to recruit this great group of guys. Our recruiting class is as strong as any class that we have signed in my 13 years of being a head coach. We wanted to sign "Winners," and I believe that we knocked it out of the park! All five players come from "WINNING" programs. Not just good programs, but great programs! The number of district, state, and conference championships that this group has won is mind blowing when you take a minute to think about it. This recruiting class is special, and I believe that they will help us win a championship here at Troy in the very near future."
