TROY, Ala. – Troy overcame an early four-run deficit to clinch a series victory over Louisiana Tech with a 7-4 win over the Bulldogs Saturday at Riddle-Pace Field. The win marks Troy's first 7-0 start since 2016 and just the second since 2008 while Louisiana Tech drops to 4-2 on the year.
Orlando Ortiz made the start for Troy on the mound, but it was Marquez Oates that earned credit for the win, his second of the year. The Trojans also saw one inning of relief from Tyson Ellis before DJ Wilkinson pitched two scoreless innings to earn the first save of his career.
Troy placed runners on the corners with no outs, and eventually loaded the bases, in the bottom of the first but were unable to get on the board. Louisiana Tech struck first with four runs in the top of the third, aided by a three-run home run from Parker Bates.
The Trojans buttoned things up however and didn't allow a run for the remainder of the game. It was Easton Kirk that finally brought Troy to life in the fifth inning with a two-RBI double to left field to score Rigsby Mosley and Drew Frederic.
In the sixth inning, Frederic hit a chopper to third and advanced to third base on a throwing by the third baseman. Kyle Mock and Reed Smith both scored on the play to give the Trojans the lead.
Troy added two insurance runs in the seventh when Smith singled up the middle to score Caleb Bartolero. The next at-bat, Mosley grounded out to second, but brought home Austin Garofalo.
Kyle Crigger was tagged with the loss for Louisiana Tech after allowing three hits and three runs, one earned, in 0.2 innings.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"That was a good win for our team. We got down, but we stayed with it and finally got a big two-out double from Easton Kirk to get us back in the game. That was a big push for our team; their pitcher was doing a good job keeping us off stride and was making good pitches. We did a good job winning this series today and I'm proud of our team."
